Europe and Networks Circle

What are the EU's energy priorities for 2026?

Athenora Consulting had the pleasure of welcoming Mechtild Wörsdörfer, Deputy Director-General of DG ENER, for a new edition of the European Networks Circle lunch.

This high-level discussion provided a valuable opportunity to align the European Commission’s priorities with the concrete expectations of our members at a time when energy has become inseparable from the EU’s economic competitiveness.

The discussions focused on several decisive questions shaping the EU’s energy agenda toward 2026:

  • How to make the Energy Union a reality with limited resources
  • The role of the Grids Package in modernising networks and integrating renewable energy
  • Financial and political room for manoeuvre to accelerate the energy transition within the negotiations of the next Multiannual Financial Framework
  • Ensuring security of supply, regulatory simplification and industrial competitiveness

The exchange highlighted two major priorities that will structure the EU’s upcoming energy strategy:

  1.  Strengthening energy independence from Russia
  2. Building a genuine Energy Union, based on enhanced infrastructure and modernised governance
